Soil structure recovery following compaction: Short‐term evolution of soil physical properties in a loamy soil

چکیده
Soil compaction by farm machinery may persist for decades, hampering soil productivity and functioning. Assessing costs guiding recovery strategies are hindered paucity of data on structure rates. A long-term Structure Observatory was established a loamy in Switzerland to monitor after prescribed compaction, better assess the roles natural processes (vegetation, macrofauna, shrink-swell cycles) patterns. The aim this study quantify short-term under conditions presence absence plant cover (ley bare soil). We measured porosity gas water transport capabilities at 0.1 0.3 m depth. Two years event, physical properties have not recovered precompaction levels, even within topsoil. Surprisingly, no differences were observed patterns ley treatments. Measurements show that rates differ among with most severely affected (permeability) exhibiting highest Total shows trend, suggesting lack decompaction. Improved functions decompaction distinct aspects recovery, latter requiring net upward mass. suggest proceeds two fronts: from surface downward, expanding around local biologically-active pockets (marked biopores) into compacted volumes. This concept could be tested additional longer time series our site as well other soils climates.

Effects of soil compaction on the relationships between nematodes, grass production and soil physical properties
As farm machinery has become heavier, concern has grown about its direct effects on soil physical conditions and its indirect effects on crop yields and soil biota. To study the relationships between these parameters, non-grazed temporary grassland plots on a loamy sand soil were subjected to full-width load traffic with widely different loads (0, 4.5, 8.5 and 14.5 t) one to four times per year...

متن کاملEffect of Slope Gradient and Soil Physical Properties on Soil Loss in Furrows of Rainfed Farms
This study was conducted to investigate the effect of slope gradient and soil physical properties (grain size distribution, bulk density, aggregate stability and permeability) on water erosion in the furrows of rainfed farms under fallow conditions. The furrows with 6 m length were installed in five rainfed farms with 6.1, 10.6, 14.8, 20.7 and 27.1% slope steepness at three replications. Resul...
متن کاملSoil physical properties, soil carbon dioxide fluxes, and soil drainage dynamics of select bioenergy cropping systems
Bioenergy cropping systems have been proposed as a way to enhance United States energy security. However, research on soil physical properties, soil-surface CO2 effluxes, and soil drainage dynamics in such systems is needed to ensure environmental sustainability in the field. The objective of our research was to evaluate soil physical properties and conditions as well as soil-surface CO2 efflux...
